Community Skips

UPDATE AS OF APRIL 2024 - Conwy County Borough Council are no longer funding the community skips due to budget cuts. Llanfairfechan Town Council see community skips as a vital resource and so are wanting to continue the community skips by hiring a private company with our own funds. It has been agreed that the Town Council will fund an 8 yard skip once a month at Station Road Car Park.

Additionally, there will be a skip in each locality – Pendalar, Nant y Berllan and Llannerch Road - once per year.

We are also working with a licensed local contractor who will collect scrap metal on the skip days.

The community skips will be a smaller service than the partnership with Conwy County Borough Council provided. Therefore we want to share with you alternative ways to recycle or get rid of waste.

Waste and Recycling

Conwy County Borough Council and other charities provide a range of free and chargeable waste removal facilities. Please see below regarding available waste and recycling services:

Furniture and large household appliances

  • You can pay for a bulky collection for furniture and large household items such as fridges, cookers and washing machines that you don’t need any more. Items are taken to Crest Cooperative to repair and donate or sell on. Items, which in their current state cannot be reused, may be used for parts or recycled.

Residents can book services online at www.conwy.gov.uk/recycling and click on the ‘Special Collections’ option or call our Advice Team on 01492 575337.

  • British Heart Foundation offers a free collection service for furniture, household electricals and specialist items which can be resold in their shops. They also have a house clearance service.
  • You can take items to the Household Recycling Centres for free. The Mochdre Reuse Shop salvages reusable items and sells them on to support St David’s Hospice. The Mochdre Reuse Shop is open: Every day 9:00 to 16:30

Clothing

  • Every two weeks, you can put out clothing, bags, and shoes for kerbside collection. Items are laundered and reused by Crest Cooperative.

Contact Crest for replacement purple bags on 01492 596783 or info@crestcooperative.co.uk. You can also pick up these bags from your local library. If you live in a rural area (i.e. on a farm) please call 01492 596783 to book your collection.

  • Many charities also welcome donations of good quality clothes, books, bags, toys, and shoes. In Llanfairfechan, we have 2 charity stores: North West Cancer Research on Station Road (next to Draper’s Carpets) and Annie’s Orphans on Village Road (opposite the school). Additionally, we have a few of large metal textiles deposit bins dotted around the town.

Small electricals

  • Every two weeks, you can put out small electricals for kerbside collection. Items are repaired and reused by Crest Cooperative.

Contact Crest for replacement bags on 01492 596783 or info@crestcooperative.co.uk

You can also pick up these bags from your local library.

If you live in a rural area (i.e. on a farm) please call 01492 596783 to book your collection.

Coffee pods

Plastic and aluminium pods should be recycled using Podback collection bags - white bags for aluminium pods, green bags for plastic pods. You will need to sign up for the Podback service to get bags. Sign up and order your FREE recycling bags on the Podback website: https://www.podback.org/

Once you have your bags, just follow the instructions, and put them out every fortnight on your textiles and electricals collection day. Or if your live in a rural area (i.e. on a farm), book a collection by calling Crest on 01492 596783.

Paying for your own Licensed waste carriers

You may wish to pay for a private firm to dispose of your waste or see an advert on social media offering cheap deals for waste disposal. This is a good solution for some people, but we warn you not to be caught out by scammers and which may mean you face a large fine.

You have a legal duty to check that the person taking your waste is a registered waste carrier.

Ask the person or business to show you proof that they are registered to carry or accept waste. Better still, confirm the details yourself by visiting Natural Resources Wales list on their website. You should also make a note of their name (or business name), vehicle type and registration. Also record the date they took your waste away and ask them where your waste is going.

If you fail to meet your duty of care towards your household waste, you could receive a £300 fixed penalty notice (FPN) or an unlimited fine if prosecuted.
